چکیده

The energy and four-momentum (Q 2) dependence of the photo-absorption cross section on the proton is calculated for helicity-1 2 and-3 2 states. An effective Lagrangian model is used, formulated in terms of meson and baryon degrees of freedom, which obeys crossing symmetry, unitarity, Lorentz and gauge invariance. The difference in the cross sections for the two helicity states, the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov integral I DHG (Q 2), is evaluated at different Q 2. We find that at small momentum transfer the absolute value of I DHG (Q 2) first increases to reach a maximum at Q 2 ≈ 0.05 GeV 2 before decreasing at higher Q 2 .

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral I GDH (Q 2), and its relation to polarized nu-cleon structure functions, is discussed from the lattice perspective. Of particular interest is the variation of I GDH (Q 2) with Q 2 , and what it may teach us about the origin and magnitude of higher-twist contributions.

We test the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule numerically by calculating the total photon absorption cross sections σ1/2 and σ3/2 on the nucleon via photon excitation of baryon resonances in the constituent quark model. A total of seventeen, low-lying, non-strange baryon resonances are included in this calculation. The transverse and longitudinal interference cross section, σTL 1/2, is found...
